Why I Prefer Male Vocalists and the Female Influence
Why I Prefer Male Vocalists and the Female Influence
My love for music is a defining characteristic. I am involved with it in many ways – composing, arranging, playing, and even recording – all because of the joy it brings. However, when it comes to singing, my personal experience has been a bit different.
Beyond my own activities, I delve into the intricacies of music composition and arrangements. Yet, I rarely record myself singing. I have only done so a few times, all for learning or teaching purposes. This is due to a simple reason: I do not possess a good singing voice. My vocal range is just a little over an octave and a half, and the quality of my tone isn’t uniformly good throughout my range.
Growing up in a family with talented musicians has shed light on the inherited musical talent. My mother, an operatic quality soprano, had a profound influence on my siblings and me. My elder sister has a very good voice and my younger brother is almost an operatic tenor. Unfortunately, I did not inherit these stellar vocal qualities, which makes me gravitate more towards the music of male artists.
The Influence of Male Vocalists
I find myself more drawn to songs with male vocalists, though not out of prejudice. It is more a matter of preference and style. My appreciation for female vocalists is equally strong. In fact, I have daughters who possess excellent singing voices, but as with many people, there are aspects of our voices we would rather not share.
Female Singers in My Repertoire
Despite my preference for male vocalists, I do include a significant number of songs by females in my repertoire. For these songs, I often need to adjust the key to a lower level. This adjustment is necessary to match the vocal range and style that suits me well. My experience with both male and female vocalists has shown me the importance of finding the right match for my musical style.
Interestingly, my experience with music programs has taught me that a good singing voice is not always required to pass a voice-based test. What is more important is a good ear and the ability to carry a tune, qualities I possess.
Conclusion
My journey with music has taught me a lot about musical preferences and voice capabilities. While I tend to prefer male vocalists due to personal and stylistic reasons, I do not hold any prejudice against female singers. In fact, I find it gratifying to explore and appreciate the diverse voices in the music world.
