Introduction

Every year, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) attracts aspiring medical students who strive for excellence. Among them, the top performers often capture the attention of both peers and media. However, the question often arises: “where did the toppers of AIIMS 2017 and 2018 go?” The truth is, many of them are still at AIIMS Delhi, engaged in their medical journey, learning, and growing.

The Continuing Journey at AIIMS

At the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi, many toppers are still pursuing their medical careers. Rather than disappearing after their exams, they continue to evolve as budding healthcare professionals, learning valuable skills and gaining practical experience.

Learning and Growth

One of the toppers from the 2017 and 2018 batches I met recently was part of a team at the Pediatrics' ward. This particular ward is renowned for its rigorous and challenging learning environment, where students can observe and practice medical procedures under the mentorship of experienced medical professionals.

I had the opportunity to witness firsthand how these students are still very much engaged in their studies. One of them was actively learning the art and craft of history taking from a senior doctor from the AIIMS MBBS 2006 batch who is currently pursuing a DM (Doctor of Medicine) in Pediatric Nephrology. This senior doctor himself learned the same skills over 11 years ago, in the same ward, from another medical student!

This intricate chain of learning speaks volumes about the enduring value of hands-on medical education. It demonstrates how knowledge and skills are passed down from one generation of medical students to the next, reinforcing the importance of perseverance and dedication to one's medical training.

A Personal Reflection on Medical Training

Reflecting on my own experiences, I find myself reminiscing about a time not so far back when I too stood at the starting point of my medical career. Just like the toppers I met at the Pediatrics' ward, I was also earnestly learning the intricacies of medical practice. It feels like only yesterday when I was there, learning the nuances of patient history and continuing to refine those skills in my clinical rotations. This continuity in the learning process underscores the intrinsic value of medical education at institutions like AIIMS.

Conclusion

The journey of medical students, including the toppers of AIIMS, is a multifaceted one, characterized by learning, growth, and dedication. Instead of simply moving on after exams, many top performers find themselves still at AIIMS Delhi, immersed in the rigorous and fulfilling medical education that awaits them. Their presence in the Pediatrics' ward, continuing to learn and grow, serves as a testament to the enduring value of their medical training and their commitment to their future careers in medicine.
