The Weirdest Haircuts in My Life: Lessons Learned

From perm disasters in the 80's to sixth-grade lock knots, here are some of the weirdest haircuts I've ever had. While some may look back on their hair memories with a chuckle, they've taught me valuable lessons.

A Perm Disaster in the 80's

Back in the 80's, I had a rather ambitious plan to grow my hair into the signature Sara Jessica Parker curls that were all the rage. With my debt weirdest haircuts, I thought a perm would do the trick. However, my hair grew up to only be a finger-sized ponytail that would only reach shoulder length. This made finding a stylist who would help me was even more challenging.

Unfortunately, the perm went wrong, leaving me with flat zigzags of strands that could never be styled into my desired curls. The chemicals from the perm were harsh and dried out my hair, causing it to have to be cut off at around 3 inches all over. My result wasn't pretty; it looked more like a wet poodle than beautiful curls. I was lucky that all photos from that time were destroyed.

Fourth-Grade Dreadlocks and School Humiliation

For me, the randomness of having dreadlocks in 4th grade was just too much. My mom, trying to be supportive and hands-off, let me style my own hair. With the hair being so curly and kinky, I struggled to comb it, and soon two huge knots developed close to my scalp. I took my chances and went to a random stylist who gave me a flattop haircut. This was 1994, and it was a bit too avant-garde for someone who wasn't cool enough to rock such an edgy hair cut.

I was so embarrassed on the first day of school with my new haircut. I even wore a hoodie with the hood up to avoid attention. During morning prayers, the teacher asked me to take the hoodie off, which I did in tears. I sobbed silently during the Prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance, and one of my classmates, a boy who wasn't your typical "nice boy," touched my shoulder and later told me that it wasn't that bad. It was a small but significant moment of support that helped me get through the weekend. By then, I had a relaxer to keep my hair more manageable.

Learning from Clients

One of my personal clients, a woman who loved her mullet hairstyle, also taught me a valuable lesson. Despite the hairstyle not being in fashion, she insisted on it, and her friends were just as partial to it. This made me realize that as a stylist, it's important to follow the client's preferences and not impose my own style or preferences. It's their hair, and they have to live with it.

My experiences with these weirdest haircuts have not only made me laugh, but they've also taught me valuable lessons in customer service and self-confidence. Here's to embracing my unique hair journey!
