The Power of Choral Music: From Beethoven to Carmina Burana

For many individuals, their journey into the world of choral music often begins with a memorable piece that resonates deeply with their soul. This descriptive journey will explore two pivotal choral pieces that have cemented their places in the hearts of enthusiasts: Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and Carmina Burana by Carl Orff. These compositions have not only laid the foundation for the author's passion but also inspired countless other musicians to seek their own musical paths.

Encountering Beethoven's Ninth Symphony

My first encounter with the power of choral music was through a recording of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, specifically the fourth movement conducted by Andre Cluytens and the Berlin Philharmonic. This was a gift for my birth year, 1958, in the form of an LP—an impressive and technologically advanced format during the 1960s, especially coupled with a portable stereo turntable/receiver. Listening to the symphony, I was utterly captivated by its grandeur and complexity. It wasn't until I reached the final moments of the fourth movement that the realization struck me: 'How can I find a group that sings this?'

My love for choral singing was born in elementary school, where I was part of choirs from fourth grade through college. Although I pursued a music degree with a focus on vocals, I never completed it. In my late forties, I revisited my passion by taking voice lessons again. It was then that I auditioned for the Houston Symphony Chorus and successfully made the cut. Since then, I have had the privilege of performing Beethoven's Ninth symphony nearly a dozen times, most notably as a member of the Bass/Baritone chorus part. While there are numerous other classical works worthy of attention, Beethoven's Ninth symphony remains a personal favorite because of its familiarity.

The Mesmerizing Carmina Burana

Another significant piece that has significantly impacted my journey was Carl Orff's Carmina Burana. My first experience with this work came through the Symphony Choir of Cape Town, where I performed it in 2013 at the Oude Libertas Open Air Amphitheatre, just outside the picturesque town of Stellenbosch in the Western Cape. The power and intensity of this choral piece, coupled with the captivating visuals of the Old Spice advert where I first encountered it, left an indelible mark on my heart.

Every new piece of music continues to be a learning curve for me, but the joy and unity of choral singing remains unmatched. While I am still learning to read music by ear, I cherish every moment of performing. The benefits of choral singing are manifold: increased oxygen intake, enhanced mind learning, and a real uplift of the soul. It is truly a privilege to engage in this form of music, and I encourage others to explore and discover their own passions.

The Transformative Journey

My love for choral music began during my school days when I was introduced to Shenandoah. However, a traumatic experience during my time in junior school left a lasting impression. Being belittled by a teacher in front of the entire class for singing out of tune was a defining moment. The shaming experience led to a fear of performing in front of others, a fear that has persisted since. Despite this, the joy and learning opportunities choral music provides continue to inspire me, making it a true passion for life.

Today, I continue to be a part of choirs and vocal performances, but as a listener rather than a participant. Cherishing the beauty of choral pieces like Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and Carmina Burana, I remain deeply grateful for the power of music to transform and inspire.
