The Impact of President Trump’s Actions on American Citizens: A Liberal Perspective

It is often debated and fiercely argued on which actions President Trump can be held responsible for that have negatively affected his political base, particularly those who identify as liberal. In this article, we explore several key areas where his policies and inactions have had profound and negative impacts on the lives of Americans, including the elderly, people of all socio-economic backgrounds, and those facing personal tragedy in the form of the pandemic.

Healthcare Costs and Medicare

A significant impact on many Americans, especially the elderly, is the shifting of healthcare costs. Prior to the inauguration of President Trump, my partner and I were fortunate to have healthcare that was cost-free to us, a benefit borne by taxpayers. However, post-Trump, we found ourselves having to pay not only for Medicare but also for supplemental insurance to cover what Obamacare once provided. This change significantly increased our financial burden, which has undoubtedly had a ripple effect on our quality of life, well-being, and overall sense of security.

Healthcare Policies and the Pandemic

One of the most divisive and damaging actions under Trump’s presidency was his handling of the pandemic. The US suffered from the highest death toll during the global pandemic, and there’s a compelling argument that Trump’s decisions were based on political considerations rather than scientific evidence. My personal experience has been devastating, as I lost loved ones to the virus due to its rapid spread and lack of proper guidelines and mitigation strategies. Friends and family members passed away in isolation, often unable to seek medical help, leading to a slow, painful, and lonely death.

Healthcare professionals were no strangers to personal attacks and political pressure, and there’s no credible evidence that heart disease death rates dropped in the US as a result of misreporting cases of COVID-19. Medical professionals and institutions across the globe, particularly those who opposed the US, were not swayed by any ‘scam’; revenues and relationships with the US played no part in their reporting. The deaths of my loved ones were not due to other diseases or conspiracy; they were tragic, preventable losses that could have been mitigated with better leadership and policies.

Taxation and Inequality

Under the Trump administration, the tax landscape significantly changed for Americans, particularly in terms of wealth distribution. While the tax cuts advertised to trickle down to all Americans were, in reality, permanent for the rich and only temporary for the middle class, my family and many like us saw our tax burdens increase. This was exacerbated by a substantial rise in the budget deficit, which further strained the financial well-being of those with lower and middle incomes. The narrative of lower taxes for all was a hollow promise, a false dawn for the masses.

The Psychological Impact of Trump’s Words

Even beyond the specifics of policy and action, the constant barrage of words and tweets from Trump had a psychological impact on individuals and society as a whole. The constant displays of his ego and disregard for the well-being of the nation created a climate of fear and uncertainty. Financial managers, like myself, dreaded the emails and tweets from the White House, fearing they would cause further losses in the financial markets. Trump’s frequent rhetoric and actions often led to a sense of betrayal and frustration, especially among those who believed in the democratic process and the rule of law.

It is important to recognize that while some may not immediately see the impact of an administration’s actions, it is the cumulative effect of inaction and poor decision-making that leads to societal suffering. The loss of life and the financial burden on ordinary citizens are not mere statistics but real, lived experiences that have lasting impacts on individuals and society.

Conclusion

President Trump’s presidency had far-reaching impacts on American citizens, particularly those who are economically vulnerable or have faced personal tragedy. From healthcare costs and the suffering caused by the pandemic to the psychological toll of his rhetoric, the negative effects are deeply felt. While some actions may be more direct than others, the inaction and lack of accountability during times of crisis contributed to the suffering of many. It is crucial to remember the human cost of these policies and the importance of well-informed, compassionate leadership.
