The Changing Perception of Philippine Folk Dance Among Students: An Empirical Study
The Philippines, a country rich in cultural heritage, has produced a vibrant and varied array of traditional dances. However, in the age of digital globalization, the popularity of these folk dances among students is a subject of ongoing debate.
The Challenge of Globalization
In recent years, globalization has had a significant impact on Filipino culture. Traditional practices, particularly folk dance, now compete with a myriad of international trends. For instance, Generation Z and Alpha, who grew up in the digital age, are more likely to be observed dancing to viral TikTok Challenges rather than engaging in traditional folk dances. This shift raises important questions about the future of cultural preservation and the role of education in maintaining cultural continuity.
An Empirical Investigation
To explore how students perceive and perform in folk dances, a qualitative and quantitative research study was conducted among Grade 9 students at Bitin National High School for the 2017-2018 academic year. A combination of a self-made questionnaire and rubrics for dance performance were utilized to gain insights into the students' awareness and skill levels.
Key Findings
The study revealed several significant findings:
The majority of students in the sample were 15 years old, followed by 14 years, 16 years, and 17 years. The overall mean for students' interest in Philippine folk dances was 3.30, indicating a moderate level of interest. Regarding the level of awareness of students to folk dance-related variables, the objectives, strategies, skills in folk dancing, and training were all interpreted as moderately aware. The exposure to Philippine folk dances was somewhat aware, and only the competence of the dance instructors was highly aware. The performance in folk dancing fundamental skills was assessed using categories of poise and grace, timing and rhythm, and interpretation of literature. Most of the respondents were rated as moderately skilled in these areas. No significant correlation was found between folk dance awareness variables and poise and grace, while a negligible correlation was observed for timing and rhythm, with only a slight correlation found for the interpretation of literature.Implications for Future Research and Education
The findings suggest that while there is a moderate level of interest in folk dances among students, there is a need for more comprehensive awareness and performance strategies. These could include more interactive and engaging dance programs, more accessible training materials, and the involvement of dance instructors with higher competencies.
Conclusion
As Filipino culture continues to integrate with global trends, it is crucial to maintain the teaching and appreciation of cultural practices like folk dances. The insights gained from this study can help educators and policymakers develop robust programs that promote cultural awareness and preserve traditional practices.
