Odysseus and Eurymachus: An Analysis of Their Similarities

As a librarian-in-training, participating in a project called 'Slam the Boards!' has provided me with the opportunity to explore the depths of The Odyssey by Homer. In particular, I have been tasked with identifying and discussing the similarities between two characters: Odysseus and Eurymachus. Although initially unfamiliar with comparing these two characters, a thorough examination of their traits and actions in the text has led to the identification of four key similarities, as well as an exploration of the differences that highlight their unique roles in the story.

Similarities Between Odysseus and Eurymachus

Upon delving into the text, I have found that there are notable similarities between Odysseus and Eurymachus. These similarities can be categorized into four main areas:

1. Love for Penelope

Both Odysseus and Eurymachus have strong affections for Penelope, the wife of Odysseus. This commonality demonstrates their admiration and desire for the queen of Ithaca. Eurymachus, one of the suitors courting Penelope, competes with other suitors for her favor, while Odysseus, though away for an extended period, undeniably holds her heart.

2. Dominance in Their Respective Circles

Both Odysseus and Eurymachus exhibit leadership and dominance within their circles. As a celebrated hero and king, Odysseus commands respect and admiration, leading his crew through perilous journeys. Conversely, Eurymachus, as one of the lead suitors, wields significant influence over the other suitors and Penelope. This dominance is reflected in their ability to sway others and make decisions that affect their immediate surroundings.
