A Defiant Encounter in Maryland

One afternoon when I was alone at home in Maryland, just outside of Washington DC, four intruders made their way to my front door, attempting to break it open with all their might. Panicked and fearful, I quickly dialed 911 and reached for my 12 gauge shotgun that I kept in the bedroom. Armed and ready, I crept towards the door, yelling through it to hopefully deter them. Unsurprisingly, it didn't work. They continued to kick the door with relentless force. As I watched the smoke emerge from the lock, I braced myself, deciding to open the door and show them who was in charge. Pointing my shotgun at them, I demanded they leave. Their reaction was immediate: they fled. The police arrived 27 minutes later. In those intense 24 minutes, my firearm undoubtedly saved me from harm. However, their slow response left me questioning the effectiveness and efficiency of the local law enforcement.

Surviving the Harshness of Nature

Between aggressive wild dogs, coyotes, and rabid raccoons, there are few exciting moments from my childhood when I was saved by a firearm. But there are practical ones that stick out. From the age of 10, I frequently went camping alone in the northern woods of Michigan during the summer. When not needed to help on my grandfather’s farm, I would pack an old WWII canvas military pack, which belonged to him. Inside were trenching tools, a few tins of food, a canteen of water, a canvas tent, fishing line, hooks, a bed roll, a buck knife, an old 22 rifle, and a film tube with waterproof matches. I could use a flint and steel, but I was simply lazy about it.
Solo camping for a week or so was a regular part of my routine. The rifle not only provided safety but also put food on my plate, usually rabbits. Squirrels and badgers were also fair game. However, I often relied on fishing for my meals. These experiences were different from the way children are treated today, where guns are generally not allowed or even discussed.

Lessons from a Nerve-wracking Encounter

About two years ago, I faced another harrowing situation that could have ended quite differently. In this case, a car attempted to stop me by slamming into me, initiating an accident. Running away and ensuring the assailant couldn't follow, I made sure I was safe. Later, we never identified the individuals involved or unraveled their motives. If not for my vehicle and gun, I wouldn't have been able to disable two vehicles. This near-miss taught me valuable lessons about preparedness and the importance of being ready to defend oneself.
