Understanding the Levels of Existence: Perception and the Notion of Death

In exploring the fundamental question of when we will die, we must consider multiple levels of existence and perception. This journey can help us understand not just the process of dying but also the various layers of our existence and being. This essay will delve into seven different levels: the cosmos, earth, family and friends, body organs and cells, the self, elements, and a hypothetical divine level. Each level provides a unique perspective on the concept of death and, conversely, the continuance of existence.

Cosmos Level

Compared to this vastness of space and time, we are insignificant.

When we look into the depths of the cosmos, we are but tiny specks in an infinite universe. The scale of the cosmos far surpasses anything that Earth-bound humans can comprehend or measure. From the grandeur of galaxies to the vastness of space, within this enormity, the existence of our survival, pleasures, and sorrows are but a mere whisper. Depending on how one perceives their existence, they can feel eternally alive, connected to the infinite cosmos, or eternally dead, just part of this vast, silent entity called the cosmos. This perception can shape how we view our time here on Earth.

Earth Level

We are among billions, and most people will never know your name.

On Earth, among the 7 billion souls, our individuality can often feel overshadowed or insignificant. Unless one has an immense impact on the lives of millions, as icons such as Gandhi or Hitler have done, they may be perceived as dying prematurely—often referred to as "Mr. Nobody". The anonymity of most individuals on Earth means that, once we are gone, our contributions and memories fade away like a meteorite that evaporates in the vast cosmic expanse.

Family and Friends Level

We are remembered until the last person who knew us has passed away.

Our lives continue to be remembered and honored by the loved ones who knew us. This level of existence ensures that our legacy is preserved, even if just in the memories and hearts of those who cared for us. The cycle of life and remembrance can stretch on for many years, as long as at least one person remembers us. This is a form of immortality, albeit ephemeral, living on through the hearts and minds of those who knew us best.

Body Organs and Cell Level

Our bodies and cells continually regenerate.

At the cellular and organ level, death and renewal are continuous processes. Cells die and are recreated; organs regenerate. However, there comes a point where this cycle of renewal stops, leading to the cessation of life. As a result, the body as we know it no longer exists, unable to perceive or interact with the world around it in the same way. This is a reminder of the impermanence of physical existence.

The Self Level

The concept of 'I' is a construct, not a permanent entity.

Our identity, often referred to as the 'I', is a combination of our memories, experiences, and the environment in which we grew up. However, the 'I' is a construct, an illusion created by our minds to impose order and continuity to our experiences. The moment our thoughts and memories fade, this level of existence disappears. It is an ephemeral construct that helps us find meaning and purpose in our existence. Once this self-via-memory and self-via-thought fades, we are left with the reality of the present moment.

Element Level

Death does not exist here; we transform into elements.

In the elemental level, the concept of death changes. When our bodies die, the atoms that make us up continue to exist, albeit in different forms. These atoms can be transformed into other elements through chemical reactions and natural processes. Thus, in this level, 'death' is a transformation rather than an end. Our essence continues to exist in an altered form.

Divine Level

At the highest level, we encounter the divine or a cosmic essence that is beyond understanding.

There is a level of existence that transcends the physical and the measurable. It represents a connection to the divine or a cosmic essence that is beyond human comprehension. While this level is speculative and not universally recognized, it offers a glimpse into the possibility of an eternal existence beyond the physical realm. This level represents the ultimate form of immortality and an understanding of existence that is eternal and unchanging.

In conclusion, the perception of death and existence can vary greatly depending on the level of thought and consciousness with which we approach it. Whether we consider ourselves insignificant in the cosmos, anonymous on Earth, or transformed into elements, the essence of our being can continue through different levels of existence. Understanding these various levels not only provides insights into our own existence but also offers a profound appreciation for the vastness and complexity of our universe.
