Exploring My Favorite Computer Fonts: Segoe UI and Minion Pro

When it comes to computer fonts, two stand out as my personal favorites: Segoe UI and Minion Pro. Each exhibits unique characteristics and offers distinct qualities that make them exceptional choices in various contexts, including system usage and web design.

Introduction to Segoe UI

Of the two, my preference leans towards Segoe UI, predominantly due to its prevalent use in Microsoft's Windows operating system. As a sans-serif font, Segoe UI provides a clean and modern look, which aligns well with the digital age we live in.

Evolution and Design of Segoe UI

What makes Segoe UI particularly impressive is its evolution over time. For instance, the font has undergone significant changes between Windows 7 and later versions such as Windows 8, 10, and 11. Notably, the newer versions boast more rounded edges, making them easier to read at larger sizes. This is reflected in the Variable family introduced with Windows 11.

One of the notable differences is in the uppercase letters I and Q, along with the digits 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, and 8. The older version of Segoe UI used in Windows 7 and Vista can be seen here. It is fascinating to see how such small changes can significantly impact the overall appearance of the font.

Additionally, Windows 11 introduces a new style of the Segoe UI font family: Variable. In this version, the edges of most characters are more curved, making it easier to read, especially at larger sizes. This can be seen in the figure above.

Discovering Minion Pro

While Segoe UI is a standout in the Windows ecosystem, my serif font of choice is Minion Pro. This font, designed by the renowned Adobe company, offers a timeless and professional look, reminiscent of classic serif fonts like Times New Roman. However, Minion Pro stands out for its unique formation of serifs, which provide a modern twist to traditional serif design.

Interestingly, Minion Pro draws inspiration from Times New Roman, a classic font known for its readability and versatility. The figure below showcases Times New Roman, highlighting the basis of Minion Pro's design.

One of the standout features of Minion Pro is its ability to present digits in both modern and old styles, allowing for flexibility in its application across a wide range of media, from textbooks to posters.

Personal Preferences in Web Design

When designing a user interface (UI) for a web application or website, I frequently opt for the font Quicksand, which stands out for its clean and elegant appearance. Similarly, Remo Pro and Plus are also favorites, offering a broad spectrum of styles that cater to different design needs. These fonts provide a modern flair and are highly legible, making them ideal for web design.

It would be wonderful to see these fonts open-sourced someday, allowing designers and developers alike to utilize their unique qualities in a wider array of projects.
