Exploring My Favorite Art Medium: A Writer's Perspective

As a writer, people often assume my favorite form of art is writing. However, it’s not entirely true. I have a deep appreciation for painting and visual art in general. This is partly due to the fact that I have never mastered the craft, which stirs feelings of both envy and admiration.

Nonfiction and a Shot at Fiction

The majority of my writing is nonfiction, but I have also dabbled in short fiction, much to the amusement of those around me. While I hold a profound respect for the craft of writing, I find myself equally fascinated by the artistic expressions of others. There is something about the human capacity to imagine and bring to life something beautiful that captivates me more than my own attempts.

Appreciation Over Envy

Musicians, authors, and artists all possess unique talents that I deeply admire. I can’t sing well, but I still appreciate music as a complex and beautiful expression. Similarly, while I cannot paint or sculpt proficiently, I hold a deep appreciation for the skill and dedication required to create visual masterpieces. Each form of art, whether it's writing, music, or painting, brings a special kind of joy and inspiration.

Movies and Dreams

Rather than just consuming art, I have had a history of wanting to be involved in the creation of it. In high school, I aspired to be a film director or a screenwriter. Although I pursued other paths, film remains one of my favorite forms of art to consume. The ability to tell a story through moving images is incredibly moving.

Personal Connection to Painting

Parallel to my love for movies and music, I have a unique connection to painting. When I was younger, I enjoyed making paintings and found art class to be not only fun but also therapeutic. However, I was discouraged and even criticized for my work, which caused me emotional distress. Consequently, I became hesitant to pursue art after middle school, opting instead to focus on photography, a field I was somewhat proficient in but not deeply passionate about.

Salvador Dali: A Master of Surrealism

Over the years, I have developed a deep fascination with the works of Salvador Dali and the Surrealist movement. Dali’s paintings remind me of the vivid dreams and imaginative scenes I have experienced. To me, the ability to convey a message or evoke emotions through a single painting is a powerful form of expression. This year, I had the privilege of visiting the Dali Museum in Figueres, Spain, which reinforced my appreciation for his work.

Conclusion

In conclusion, my favorite form of art is not one set medium but rather the ones I believe I cannot do myself. Whether it's painting, music, or films, I find joy and inspiration in the dedication and skill of others. Visiting art museums, attending live concerts, and watching stand-up comedy and poetry performances all awaken a sense of wonder and appreciation for the rich tapestry of human creativity.

Art of all kinds, in all its forms, is a source of continuous inspiration, reminding me of the beauty that can be found in the world when given the right tools and will.
