Encountering the Unexplainable: My Most Surreal Experiences

Life is filled with moments that defy explanation, moments that linger in the mind and defy classification. These are the surreal experiences, instances where the veil between the known and the unknown is lifted enough to allow a glimpse of the inexplicable. Here are a few surreal encounters that I have had, each leaving an indelible mark on my life.

Navigating Spiritual Encounters with Angels (2003)

On midnight of July 29-30, 2003, something extraordinary occurred in my living room. As I sat in prayer, an angelic presence became visible to me. The experience was both awe-inspiring and terrifying, transcending the ordinary boundaries of normal human experience.

One of the angelic beings instructed me to pick a date, but I declined, feeling overwhelmed by the task. Instead, the spirit advised me to seek them at midnight, daybreak, and midday. This interaction was a divine directive, guiding my steps in a manner that is both mystifying and comforting.

The other being, standing to my right, gave me a mysterious key to swallow, promising words that would come forth from my mouth. This encounter brought me face-to-face with the ineffable, leaving me both humbled and humored.

Homeless and Asleep Aboard Boats (Mid-90s)

Homelessness can sometimes present an unusual canvas for life’s happenings. Back in the mid-90s, my brother and I were scavenging for a quiet place to seek refuge. One day, we found ourselves on the embankment of the River Thames in London, sleeping on the gangplanks of boats. The calm and stillness of the water, combined with the isolation of the location, led to the longest and deepest sleep of our lives. Awaking in the morning could have been a mundane affair, but it wasn’t: it was surreal, as if the world had paused to watch over us.

Supporting a Loved One in their Final Moments (2015)

The most harrowing and tender surreal experience came when I was by my mother's side as she passed away. These moments of farewell, where the barriers between life and death become blurred, leave an impact that words alone cannot fully capture.

Unforgettable Encounters in an Unlikely Setting (2001)

The post-9/11 days were overshadowed by a sense of impending dread and uncertainty. One incident stands out: while attending a conference in Baltimore, the hotel we were staying in was evacuated due to the threat of a potential terrorist attack. For hours, I sat transfixed by the tragedy unfolding on my TV, mesmerized by history itself.

The surreal experience extended to the meal we had during the evacuation. Scrambling to find somewhere to eat, we ended up at a restaurant known for its inauspicious reputation—Hooters. Facing the horrors of the day, the stark contrast of being served wings and playing loud music at noon was a stark reminder of life's ability to be both bizarre and beautiful.
