Embracing Values: The Role of Ideals vs. Practical Concepts in Modern Society
In today's increasingly monetized world, there is a growing concern over whether society values abstract principles such as justice, fairness, ethics, and morality, or if it is predominantly consumed by more down-to-earth practical concepts like money, career, and power.
Are We Embracing God's Presence?
Let's consider the concept of 'God's presence.' It is something that one would either be aware of due to personal experience or due to the explanations of others. Personally, I am an atheist and, in my idealistic interpretation of the question, it comes down to valuing abstract principles of human society over pragmatism.
I acknowledge that some think they feel the presence of a higher power, but in my experience, no one has managed to explain it coherently. Thus, for me, the idea of God's presence remains elusive and unattested.
The Dilemma of Modern Society
Unfortunately, I believe that we can do much better. The modern society is dominated by pragmatic and monetized values. This does not mean these values are inherently bad; the issue is that they often overshadow deeper principles of compassion, justice, and ethical conduct.
It is important to recognize that this societal shift is not driven by religious beliefs alone. Even within religious communities, there is a growing emphasis on practical outcomes rather than spiritual values. The struggle is universal, not confined to any specific religious group.
Conscience, Not Religion
Being a decent person does not require belief in a deity. Ethical behavior is not insured by religious adherence; rather, it is a reflection of one's thoughts and actions. It is our conscience, maintaining the core principles of a fair and just society, that truly matters.
I advocate for embracing the liberal and caring ideals of our society. Whether we refer to these ideals as a philosophy, a religion, or simply as something we wish to believe in, they form the foundation of a decent and just society. The challenge lies in ensuring these ideals are not marginalized in favor of more practical concerns.
The Eternal Quest for Balance
Historically, the idea of 'God's presence' as perfect goodness and love has been both embraced and rejected equally. This duality reflects humanity's continuous quest for balance between pragmatic concerns and abstract values.
As we navigate the complexities of our modern world, it is crucial not to lose sight of the fundamental values that shape our societal fabric. Embracing these values is a collective responsibility, one that requires mindful introspection and conscious effort.
Let us not allow the minutiae of daily life to erode the essence of who we are as a society. The pursuit of justice, fairness, and morality, whether defined by our individual beliefs or universally accepted ideals, should continue to guide us.
