Choosing Humanities: My Journey and Lessons Learned Throughout my life

Choosing Humanities: My Journey and Lessons Learned

Throughout my life, I've had to make several significant choices that have shaped who I am today. One choice that stands out was switching from Humanities to Management after my 12th grade. Let me share my story and the valuable lessons I learned along the way.

Switching Streams: Humanities to Management

After clearing the IPMAT Rohtak 2022, I made the decision to switch from Humanities to Management. This decision wasn't made lightly; it was a reflection of my evolving interests and aspirations.

Let me be clear: I do not regret choosing Humanities. However, life would have been easier if I had pursued Commerce in 12th grade. This is a question that often comes up, and I believe it's a valid one. The reason is simple: I would have regretted not taking Humanities more than I would have regretted taking it.

My journey started back in 10th grade when I was sure that I would choose Humanities. History and Civics were subjects I loved, and becoming a civil servant was the goal. However, as I delved deeper into these subjects, I realized that my views and interests had shifted. History, which I thought I loved, became a mundane study of ancient India, and Civics, which was never a priority, was made even more boring by an uninspiring teacher and rigors of online classes. My desire to understand business and explore other fields of study soon became evident.

Lessons in Decision Making

My experience taught me several valuable lessons:

1. Decision Making

Decisions sometimes have unexpected outcomes. What works for one person may not work for another. The important thing is to make the best decision based on the knowledge and information available at the time. Hindsight bias can often cloud our judgment, making it difficult to see the bigger picture.

2. Autonomy

During the process of switching streams, I had to fight with my parents to get permission to pursue Humanities. It wasn't easy, and they were understandably frustrated. However, this experience taught me the importance of autonomy. Taking my own decisions, even when it's tough, is a crucial life skill that I've carried with me.

3. Interesting Learnings

While in Humanities, I discovered subjects that piqued my interest, such as Political Science and Economics. These subjects broadened my horizons and provided me with a unique perspective. Today, I'm still able to contribute valuable insights, thanks to the knowledge I gained.

Would I Do It Again?

Without a doubt, I would choose Humanities again. My experience has been incredibly enriching, and I know that I've made the right choice for me.

Life Lessons

Extending this experience to a broader perspective, I also have a piece of advice for those who are currently deciding their paths in life. Here are a few key takeaways:

Autonomy in Decision Making: Just like I did, it's important to take control of your choices and fight for what you believe is best for you. Don't let others control your life based on their perceptions and expectations.

Choosing the Right Path: Don't be afraid to explore options outside of what is traditionally expected. Pursue your passions and interests, even if they're different from what others expect.

Focus on Your Goals: Stay focused on your dreams and aspirations. Be consistent, persistent, and immune to distractions. This will help you achieve your goals and lead a fulfilling life.

Good luck on your journey. Whether you choose Humanities, Commerce, or any other path, the most important thing is to make the best decision for yourself.

Key Takeaways:

Decisions sometimes have unexpected outcomes. Autonomy is crucial for making meaningful choices in life. Exploring various subjects can lead to interesting and valuable insights. Stay focused on your goals and be persistent.
