Understanding the Passion Behind Theatre Arts

As someone who has dedicated my life to the excitement and creativity of theatre arts, I

My Journey with Theatre

my greatest passion is undoubtedly theatre. My academic career in theatre arts has been complemented by my active involvement in community theatre, which has been a rewarding experience. At 45 years of age, I am deeply engaged in a community where talent thrives. The area is rich with various theatre options, ranging from crowd-pleasing musicals to edger work like Equus, and even original works such as locally written one-act plays.

A Critical Perspective

One message from my college theatre department head has always resonated with me. During a senior year department convocation party, she emphasized that 'at any given time, 99% of Actors Equity members are not making a living through theatre. They are working in jobs like waiting tables, stocking shelves, or any number of other gigs to earn a living.' This statement highlights the true nature of a career in theatre arts: one that is often a calling rather than a profession.

Challenges and Realities

Despite the passion and dedication required, the reality is that only a few can actually make a living from theatre. This contrasts sharply with other artistic professions where part-time or freelance work can still support a livelihood. However, I harbor no ill will towards those who succeed; instead, I wish them all the best. Working in any art is inherently unpredictable; many struggle with the feast-or-famine nature of their craft. Personally, I prefer pursuing my passion without the constant worry of subsisting.

Deciding Between Art and Livelihood

The decision to pursue theatre as a profession often hinges on financial stability. The uncertainty of income can overshadow the joy and fulfillment of performing. For me, choosing a career in theatre would mean constantly balancing the need for a sustainable income with the urge to create meaningful art. While I love the work, the reality of living solely on it is daunting.

Therefore, I have opted to focus on theatre as a passion rather than a profession. This approach allows me to indulge in the creative process while ensuring that my daily life is secure and stable. Ultimately, passion and artistry can coexist without the pressure of subsisting solely on them.
