A Unique Perspective as a Middle School Teacher: Canvassing Tactfulness in Puberty-Related Matters

While some professions bring home a sizeable paycheck and others ignite a deep-seated passion, my profession certainly falls into the latter category. As a middle school teacher in the U.S., I earn a good living from my work but find myself utterly detaching from it. Not unique to the global workforce, this sentiment is deeply personal to me and underscores the journey of self-discovery and the profound connection I have with each student.

A Wide Range of Experience

My career in education has spanned a diverse array of fields, both in England and the U.S., providing me with a wide range of experience that has enhanced my ability to use written language flexibly, depending on the audience. This includes copy editing, where developing alternatives to certain phrases has been a critical aspect of my role. This adaptability not only helps me in my professional endeavors but also in my daily interactions with students.

As a middle school teacher, the daily challenges are numerous, and one of the most delicate areas of care involves addressing the awkward and often humorous aspects of adolescence. Dealing with puberty-related issues with tactfulness is an essential skill that I have honed over the years. Here are some of the scenarios I face on a weekly, monthly, and even annual basis:

Weekly Matters

Tactfully informing a student that they need to apply deodorant. Explain to a student why something they heard online is unsuitable for a school setting. Recognize and address students' personal physical and vocal changes with sensitivity.

Monthly Matters

Tactfully request that a female colleague address a student's uniform or makeup concerns. Work to accommodate students in the classroom without putting unnecessary pressure on them.

Annual Matters

Send very tactful emails to parents requesting a conversation about appropriate behavior and timing at school.

These interactions require a deep well of empathy, understanding, and creativity to maintain a balance between sensitivity and support. The ability to address these matters with tactfulness is a unique aspect of my role, and it highlights the complex and multifaceted nature of teaching.
