Exploring Music: From Instruments to Songwriting

Music has been an integral part of my life since I was a child. While I may not be a prodigious performer, I have always been passionate about music and the beauty it brings to our lives. Over the years, I have explored various instruments and genres, and now I am eager to share my knowledge with those who are interested in delving deeper into the world of music.

Discovering My Musical Path

My journey with instruments began at a young age. Although I don’t play any instruments myself, I am more than willing to guide you through the exciting world of music. Whether it's learning about different instruments, understanding music theory, or even writing songs, I am here to help.

One of the instruments that I have played is the bass guitar. While I no longer play it regularly, my experience with the bass guitar taught me the fundamentals of rhythm and bass lines. This has been particularly useful when I am learning music theory on guitar, which I now study as a side instrument to complement my exploration in theory.

A Versatile Musical Palette

I have tried my hand at several instruments, including the guitar, piano, ukulele, mandolin, and even the recorder. While my skills may not be professional-level, I have managed to get by with them. I also enjoy singing, even though I am still navigating the challenges of puberty.

Some of my other interests include the flute, violin, and cornet. I started playing the cornet in my youth and was particularly drawn to the style of the late great cornetist, Bix Beiderbecke. Although I have not mastered the violin and cornet yet, I am committed to learning and improving my skills.

Music as a Family Legacy

Music is not just a personal passion for me; it is also a significant part of my family legacy. My father was a rock artist, both a drummer and a singer, and my sisters are both wonderful singers. Growing up in an environment where music was so prevalent has definitely influenced my passion for the arts.

We were fortunate to have free instrument lessons provided by our school. This early exposure to music opened doors for me to explore various instruments and eventually pursue music professionally. At the Manhattan School of Music, my dedication to the violin brought me local fame, unpaid jobs with several symphony orchestras, and professional engagements, including my role with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, where I will be retiring after a successful 50-year career.

My love for music extends beyond playing and performing. I have found joy in learning music theory, which has helped me appreciate the intricacies of composition and improvisation. I am also an enthusiastic learner and enjoy reviewing and improving my skills at the piano and on the guitar. Additionally, I have a YouTube channel where I occasionally share my musical journey, including performances with my band, like the recording of our Christmas concert.

Exploring the Possibilities

Music is not just a hobby for me; it is a way of life. From playing instruments to diving into music theory and songwriting, I am excited to explore the many facets of music. Whether you are interested in becoming a proficient musician, understanding the nuances of music theory, or simply enjoying the process of creating your own songs, I am here to support and inspire you.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or if you want to delve into a specific instrument, genre, or theory concept. Let’s embark on this musical journey together!
