When I first met Karen at a students recital/forum at USC, I was struck by her talent. She played a Bach fugue on the marimba, and it was evident that she was one of the best students in the percussion department. Despite not discussing her gender, it was clear to me and everyone around her that she was exceptional. She went on to have a successful career as a percussionist, alongside a very talented trombone player, and is a great example of the opportunities available for women in this field.
